The Work of a Dental Hygienist
Dental Hygienists are increasingly valued members of the oral healthcare team who work under the prescription of a dentist. The Dental Hygienist works with preventive and therapeutic procedures aimed to prevent and/or control dental caries and periodontal diseases. The Hygienist provides oral healthcare advice and procedures such as scaling, polishing, placement of fissure sealants, taking of radiographs and administering of local anaesthetic.
Educational and other Qualifications
Both Cork and Dublin Dental Schools offer a Diploma in Dental Hygiene. This two year full time programme entitles the holder to register with the Irish Dental Council and practice as a dental hygienist. This qualification is also recognised throughout Europe. Practical clinical teaching is delivered through the use of simulation units and by treating patients under supervision qualified, experienced hygienists and dentists. Theoretical teaching is delivered in combination with undergraduate dentists as well as small group teaching targeted specifically towards hygienists.
