The latest report from the National Consumer Agency shows significant variations in the prices charged by dentists and confirms that there is real competition in Ireland.
Fintan Hourihan, Chief Executive of the Association, says the number of dentists who display their fees has increased by one-third in the past twelve months (from 25% in the equivalent NCA survey published in June 2009 to 32% in the latest survey)
The Association has commissioned research which shows that 97% of dentists have reduced or frozen their fees in the past twelve months.
In spite of this, the state has slashed spending on dental care and removed supports and subsidies for 1.6m medical card holders and 2m PRSI insured persons. We estimate the state has announced cuts in state supports for patients by over 120m euro in just over the past year alone.
While we cannot comment on fees per se, it is notable that the higher fees are charged in urban areas where costs are greater
We are pleased to see also that the NCA acknowledges the support of the Irish Dental Association in promoting price transparency.
We look forward to discussing the report's findings with the NCA presently.
