The Association has made repeated representations to the HSE, the Minister for Health and Children and the Chief Medical Officer in recent weeks regarding the lack of any communication with dentists in regard to swine flu.
As recently as last Monday, the IDA raised this matter in a meeting with the Minister.
Of course this difficulty simply serves to emphasise the importance of having a Chief Dental Officer in place within the Department who ought to take the lead in this intiiative and the consequences of not having a CDO in place within the Department.
It is simply unacceptable that such guidance has still to be issued in spite of repeated representations on this issue. The HSE has given an undertaking to prepare such guidance but we still await sight of any such communication.
At the bottom of our homepage we have available to download an algorithm for the management of persons with acute febrile respiratory illness who may have swine influenza A (H1N1) which has been produced by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre as well as specific guidance for dentists produced by the US-based Center for Disease Prevention and Control.
In the meantime, as a service to IDA members we wish to refer to a number of websites which can offer assistance to dentists.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has prepared specific guidance for dentists at www.cdc.gov/swineflu.
In Ireland, general guidance is available from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre www.hpsc.ie and also from the website of the Department of Health and Children www.doh.ie.
